The building is crowned by a beautifully restored copper cornice emblazoned with "1889? and perches two terra cotta gargoyles who peer down the building's ornate façade. The façade features brownstone carvings, columns, and pilasters, which house a row of carved demons heads looking onto the sidewalk below. The building has since housed hatters, furriers, cloak makers, shirt makers, flower makers, union dissenters, embezzlers, jury duty evaders, and was converted to residential use in 1981 following the artist in residence loft law.History:Lot 10 of Block 545 in Manhattan was initially inherited and parceled out by Anthony Bleecker in 1789 after the departure of the British following the Revolutionary War. The lot was sold and developed in into "Colonnade Houses? in 1883, which mimicked the style of "LaGrange Mansion? ? which still exist today on Lafayette Street ? and were then considered the grandest homes outside of London. Lot 10 would remain a Colonnade House until 1887 when it was sold and developed for commercial use by the brothers Jacob and William Stolle. The brothers commissioned architect Alfred Zucker to design a six story building to be used for commercial use.
